Coastguard New Zealand is the charity saving lives at sea and is the primary maritime search and rescue organisation in Aotearoa. Our 2,000+ volunteers are ordinary people doing an extraordinary job in getting over 6,000 kiwis home safely each year. 

We are recruiting for Volunteer Radio Operators in the Auckland area. 

Our Volunteer Radio Operators are critical to the effective coordination of New Zealand’s front-line service response to search and rescue incidents on the water provided by highly competent volunteers and professionals. In addition to Search and Rescue services, Coastguard provides a variety of information and educational services designed to maximise the public's safe enjoyment of the water.

As a Volunteer Radio Operator you’ll be part of a nationwide team where your diverse range of responsibilities will contribute to Coastguard’s safety-related communications services which operate 24/7, 365-days a year. Your duties could include taking the trip reports from boaties, issuing weather reports and important information on the VHF Radio, taking incident calls from the public, handling marine emergencies and calls for assistance. 

You will work as part of a team and also work closely with other agencies, such as the Police, St John, Fire and the Harbourmasters. 

We are looking for someone with a keen eye for detail and the ability to work with confidence during high-pressure situations. Being a team player is essential, with the ability to influence, make critical decisions and encourage those around you. You will be able to plan accurately, exhibit pronounced organisational skills as well as displaying professionalism and pride in your work.

You do not need any formal qualifications to join, we will train you at our cost. You will receive training of the highest standard including internationally recognised qualifications such as the VHF Marine Radio Operator Certificate. There is an initial period of training before you move onto buddy shifts, where someone will supervise your work until you have passed the trainee assessment. 

The training and shifts equate to approx 15-30 hours a month but can increase during the busy summer season. It is really up to you after that as to how much time you have to give, we find our Comms volunteers love to spend more time with us over and above the basic shifts requirements.

Skills & Experience

NZ/Australian Citizen or NZ Permanent Resident. 

A reasonable degree of keyboard skills (40 wpm)

 Good hearing (with or without aids)

A clear unaccented voice that is understandable over the airwaves. 

Ability to multi-task.
